Elephant census for KAZA

The first-ever coordinated aerial elephant count across the five partner KAZA countries runs between August and October 2022.

The survey is being led by the KAZA Secretariat with its 5 member
states, with support from WWF.

The results will inform the development of collective action amongst
KAZA partner states for the long-term management of Africa's largest
transboundary elephant population, and to maximize community benefits while
minimizing human-wildlife conflict. The results will also feed into the IUCN
African Elephant Specialist Group African Elephant Database and form the
basis for the development of a long-term KAZA elephant monitoring framework.

A workshop to train observers and enumerators was held in Kasane, Botswana in July.
