WWF under the Biodev2030 project in collaboration with the National Environment Management Authority convened the 4th open ended working meeting for the post 2020 global biodiversity.

According to Simon Peter Weredwong, the WWF Uganda Program Conservation Manager, participants took time to build consensus on Uganda’s position on the salient issues within the current Global Diversity Framework document.

The meeting was attended by the CBD Focal person, Francis Ogwal, representatives from Government Ministries and Agencies, Civil Society Organizations, Academia, among others.

The WWF Uganda Biodev2030 Project Manager, Francis Alinyo stated that the meeting was able to fully interrogate the Geneva text and input into the draft provided.

“Uganda’s position was further re-affirmed. However, here is still an opportunity for non-accredited stakeholders to contribute towards Uganda’s text before the Nairobi meeting due in June,2022. This is an opportunity for WWF to integrate components of the “New Deal for Nature” into Uganda’s country positions for articulation at the next COP15”, he explained.

At the national level, The Open-Ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework is tasked with the development of the country’s post-2020 global biodiversity framework. This process is expected to lead to the adoption of a post-2020 global biodiversity framework during the upcoming meetings in Nairobi and Kunming.
